The phone vibrated in Amelia's hand. She glanced at the screen, a new message from the event planner. Her stomach lurched. The party, the one she’d been organizing for her best friend’s 30th? It wasn’t happening. Her carefully constructed schedule of errands and decorations and phone calls had been destroyed.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were observing herself from a distance. Her vision swam. She was supposed to bake the cake. She imagined the disappointment on her friend’s face. A bitter taste filled her mouth.

She let out a frustrated sigh, which turned into a shuddering breath. This had to be fixed. She took another breath, and began re-reading the email.
