"Well, that’s just… great," Leo muttered, his voice flat. He kicked at a loose pebble on the sidewalk, sending it skittering across the pavement. The news had arrived via a curt text message. All that time, all that effort, for nothing. He felt the muscles in his jaw clench.

His hands were clenched in fists, he shoved them in his pockets. He had planned to make a grand gesture, something to show her how much she meant to him. The restaurant was booked, the band was scheduled, the gifts were bought. Now, what? He felt exposed, vulnerable.

He began walking faster, a restless energy coursing through him. The sky seemed a little too bright, the sounds of the city a little too loud. He just wanted to be alone.
