A cold dread settled in Sophia’s bones as she reread the email. The carefully crafted decorations, the expensive venue, the meticulously planned speeches – all down the drain. The pressure in her head mounted. She sat on the couch, the plush fabric feeling scratchy against her skin.

Her fingers danced nervously over the armrest. Her breathing grew shallow and erratic. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. She wanted to yell, to break something. She bit down hard on her lip, tasting blood.

She stood up abruptly, pacing the room, searching for something, anything, to ground her. She needed a way to control the chaos inside.
