The coffee tasted like ash, just as everything had. Clara trudged to the mailbox, each step heavy with the weight of unpaid bills and a crumbling relationship. The sight of a card, nestled amidst the overflowing junk mail, stopped her cold.

She picked it up, her hands trembling slightly. "Happy Birthday!" the card exclaimed, its bright colors a jarring contrast to her mood. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She knew she should feel grateful, but the gesture felt like a mocking reminder of joy she no longer possessed.
