"Another rejection," David muttered, his voice tight. The application had been his last hope, and the disappointment settled in his gut like a stone. He forced himself to walk to the mailbox, a chore he’d been dreading all day.

He found a card. No name, just a simple "Hope you have a good one!" printed in a cheerful font. He let out a humorless laugh. Good one? What did they know?

He ripped the card in half, then tore it into smaller and smaller pieces, a tangible expression of his frustration. He balled up the shredded remnants in his fist, a desperate desire to simply disappear.
