Her breathing was shallow, rapid. The argument with Alex had been particularly heated. She felt the familiar sting of tears pricking her eyes, a physical manifestation of her emotional exhaustion. She hated feeling this way. She was usually so in control.

The apartment felt too small, too filled with the unspoken resentments that festered between them. She picked at a loose thread on the sofa, her fingers fumbling, unable to find purchase. The world around her seemed to spin, colors blurring at the edges.

She needed to get out.
