He drummed his fingers on the table, a nervous tic he couldn’t seem to control. The thought of arguing about the pet again with Maya made his throat constrict. He knew he was being difficult, but the idea of sharing the apartment with a creature whose needs he had no control over filled him with a low-grade unease.

The silence that had settled in the apartment was almost unbearable. He could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator, a constant reminder of the stillness. He stood up abruptly, pulling at the collar of his shirt.

He desperately needed some air.
