The ink on the eviction notice seemed to leap off the page, each letter a sharp jab. Thomas, reading the letter, felt his stomach clench. He ran a hand across his forehead, and wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to pace, back and forth across the small, confined space of his apartment. The world around him seemed to tilt, and he grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself. His voice, when he finally spoke, was strained, barely above a whisper: "This can't be happening."
