"You're what?" Maria’s voice cracked. Her eyes widened, her throat suddenly felt constricted. Across the table, David was speaking, his words a jumble of reasons and plans that failed to penetrate the fog in her brain. She felt a throbbing ache in her temples.

He was moving, gone. They had been inseparable since high school, always together. The thought of a future without him was like trying to imagine a world without color. The cheerful chatter of the cafe felt like an assault.

She excused herself and went to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face. The image in the mirror was unfamiliar, her face pale, her eyes wide and haunted. She took a few deep breaths, trying to steady the rapid pulse in her chest. She needed to get herself together.
