Gemotions

“Oh,” she said, the word a small, deflated sound. Her stomach lurched, a sudden, unpleasant sensation. Across the worn kitchen table, Ben was animated, gesturing enthusiastically as he spoke. She wanted to interrupt, but she couldn't seem to form the words.

Ben was going, leaving for a new job in Chicago. The apartment, which had always felt like their shared sanctuary, suddenly felt cold and vast. She felt the urge to pace, but she forced herself to stay still, to appear calm.

She stood up and started to wash the dishes, the hot water offering no comfort. The rhythmic clink of the plates and cutlery did nothing to soothe the tightness in her chest. She felt a wave of nausea, and a sudden, urgent need for air.
