The vibrant sunset outside the window felt like a cruel joke. "I'm so happy for you," he forced out, the words feeling alien and hollow. Across the room, Alex was packing, surrounded by boxes and packing tape, radiating an almost manic energy. John just felt… empty. His stomach was a tight knot.

He swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice steady. Alex, his partner in crime, was moving to Seattle. He had always imagined their future together, here. He felt a deep, wrenching sadness, and he was struggling to process the emotions.

He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing nothing to cushion the blow. The silence was deafening, punctuated only by the rhythmic scrape of tape. He wanted to shout, to plead, to make it all stop. He felt tears prick at his eyes.
