The hum of the fluorescent lights grated on her already sensitive nerves. She chewed on the inside of her cheek, a habit she’d been unable to break. The waiting room was filled with the hushed whispers of strangers, all of whom seemed strangely calm. Her own anxiety was a tangible thing, a weight pressing down on her chest, making it difficult to breathe.

The receptionist called her name, and she rose, her legs feeling like lead. She stepped inside the office, bracing herself for… something. The therapist looked up.

It was Paul, the boy who used to torment her during the school years. Paul, the one who'd made her life a misery. The Paul who now held a degree and wore a gentle smile. She felt a mix of bewilderment and dread wash over her.

“Please, have a seat, Emily,” he said, his voice surprisingly soft.
