Mr. Abernathy ran a hand through his thinning hair, the action a familiar nervous habit. Papers overflowed his desk, a testament to the mountain of grading that loomed before him. He sighed, the sound heavy with fatigue, and stared at the clock. Another hour before he could even *think* about leaving the school. His jaw clenched as he considered the upcoming parent-teacher conferences.

A package sat on his desk, a small, unassuming box. He hadn't noticed it before. He picked it up, feeling a tremor in his fingers. No return address. Curiosity piqued, he carefully opened it. Inside, nestled on tissue paper, was a hand-carved wooden bird.

A note fluttered out. "Thank you, Mr. Abernathy, for believing in me." The signature was illegible, but the sentiment was clear. A wave of something unexpected washed over him, a warmth he hadn't anticipated. He picked up the bird, turning it over in his hands. He felt a small smile tug at his lips.
