The phone vibrated again, another reminder of the looming deadline. Sarah ignored it. She felt a cold dread creeping through her, a sensation that had settled in the pit of her stomach since reading Mark’s book about her. He portrayed her as a cold, calculating career woman who prioritized work over everything.

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the image of the book. The words he had written burned behind her eyelids.

She rose from her desk, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. She needed to escape.
