James stared at the laptop screen, the cursor blinking mockingly. He was supposed to be writing a proposal, but his mind was elsewhere. He couldn’t shake the image of the novel he had found in Emma’s drawer. The book painted him as a selfish, unsupportive partner. His chest felt constricted.

He sighed, pushing back from his desk. He felt a deep weariness, a bone-deep fatigue that seeped into his very marrow. The silence of the apartment felt heavy, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator.
