"Condo conversion?" Maria muttered, her voice tight, the paper rustling in her trembling hands. Her apartment, once a sanctuary, now seemed to shrink around her. The familiar scent of her lilac candles, usually calming, now felt suffocating.

She slammed the paper down on the kitchen counter, the action more out of frustration than purpose. The sudden change had set her teeth on edge. She felt the urge to pace, back and forth, from the living room to the bedroom and back again. The space she’d meticulously curated, filled with memories, suddenly felt vulnerable, threatened.

The thought of having to navigate the complexities of buying, or worse, finding a new place, left a bitter taste in her mouth. She ran a hand through her hair, her fingers tangling in the strands. "This is insane," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
