"This can't be happening," Karen whispered, her voice barely audible. The paper felt like fire in her grasp. The news was unwelcome. Her fingers were twitching. Her jaw ached with tension. She felt the urge to crumple the notice, to tear it into tiny pieces.

She found herself walking restlessly from room to room. The familiar objects around her seemed to taunt her. Her plants, her books, her cozy rug - suddenly, all were imperiled. She ran a hand through her hair, her fingers getting caught in the tangles.
