The moment Mark read the notice, a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. His apartment, the only stability he’d known for years, was being taken away. He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to shut himself away. He closed his eyes, squeezing them tightly as if to shut out the world.

He stumbled to his couch and sat down heavily, the soft cushions failing to provide any comfort. He picked at a loose thread on the sofa, his fingers trembling. The familiar scent of his apartment, a mix of old books and dried herbs, now felt stale, suffocating. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the rapid, erratic beat of his heart.
