The coffee shop was too loud, filled with the clatter of cups and the low murmur of conversations. Sarah’s hands clenched as she sat across from her successor, a woman named Emily who smiled with unsettling cheer. The cafe seemed to amplify the way the music was getting on her nerves.

Emily asked about the "best" way to deal with certain difficult customers.

"I always go with what works,” Sarah replied, her tone deliberately vague. She sipped her coffee, staring out the window at the passing cars.

When Emily asked for the name of a contact, Sarah just stared back. "Look it up. It’s in the address book." She was not going to make this easy.
