“But I need to be there,” I muttered, my voice tight. The airline representative sighed, a gesture that immediately incensed me. They were offering me a hotel room and a flight first thing in the morning. Absolutely not. The graduation ceremony was tomorrow, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see my daughter receive her diploma. My jaw felt locked, my chest compressed. I’d already made arrangements, booked the hotel, bought the celebratory bouquet. There were no other options, not in my mind. The delay was simply an obstacle to be overcome.
