The phone rang. It was the company. Amelia's heart leaped, but when she heard the news, her face fell. The words "we've gone with another candidate" hung in the air, heavy and disappointing. She'd spent weeks preparing.

"I see," she said, her voice flat, emotionless. She kept her tone polite, formal, like she was talking to a stranger. As the HR person continued to speak, Amelia tuned out the rest of the conversation.

She would not ask for feedback. She would not acknowledge defeat. She would apply for *every* open position at the same company, even if it meant doing the same application a hundred times.

The feeling in her stomach burned with each passing second, but Amelia's face remained rigid, a mask of composure.
