From across the room, it was like seeing a ghost. There was Sarah, his ex, laughing with a group of friends. It was a perfectly innocent scene, and yet a wave of something akin to resentment washed over Robert. He'd made a conscious effort to avoid her, but now, here she was, in his line of sight.

He crossed his arms and remained rooted in place. He wouldn’t go near her. He wouldn’t engage. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. He'd stand there, an unmoving sentinel, a silent testament to his… independence.

He watched her, a small muscle twitching in his jaw. When her gaze finally met his, he didn’t flinch. He just held her eyes, the message clear. He was unfazed. He was unmoved.
