“The song was called ‘Starlight Serenade,’ I swear,” I said, my voice rising in pitch. My friend, Jake, laughed, shaking his head. “No way, man. It was ‘Midnight Echoes.’ I remember it perfectly.” A flush crept up my neck, and I felt my fingers curl into fists.

The memory was vibrant, like a painting he refused to repaint. It was a song dedicated to the night. It couldn't be anything else.

He was grinning, waiting for me to back down. He probably thought it was a small thing, but it was important. I crossed my arms, my eyes narrowed. I knew what I heard, and I was sure of it.
