Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya’s throat. She coughed, swatting at a rogue sunbeam that illuminated swirling motes. The cardboard boxes sprawled like fallen soldiers, casualties of a decades-long purge. Maya, on a mission to locate her grandmother's porcelain doll, was not pleased. Each box, each meticulously labeled tab, felt like a deliberate obstacle.

Her fingers, though, were itching to find something, anything, other than brittle old dresses and chipped teacups. She flipped the lid of a box marked "Maya - School Years." A sigh escaped her, a sound of profound boredom and resistance.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed construction paper and faded report cards, was a familiar composition book. Her handwriting, sharp and angular, mocked her from the cover. A faint blush warmed her cheeks as she snatched the book up, slammed the lid, and stalked downstairs.
