"You didn't see me play," Zara spat, her voice tight with suppressed fury. The coach, a man twice her size, flinched. She looked him square in the eye, the fire in her gaze undeniable. He'd tried to offer encouragement, to soften the blow. Zara didn't want any of it.

Later, she headed to the gym, the familiar scent of sweat and liniment a balm to her agitated nerves. She ignored the usual warm-up. Instead, she moved straight into her most strenuous routine, pushing herself harder than ever before. She was going to show them. She would prove, beyond any doubt, that they had made a mistake.
