The notice pinned to the break room bulletin board felt like a personal affront. “Marketing Department Transfer - Effective Immediately: Amelia Black.” Amelia stared at it, arms crossed, the crinkling of the cheap paper under her furious gaze. Immediately? She'd poured three years of her life into accounting, into mastering the ledger sheets. Marketing? It sounded… frivolous.

Her jaw clenched. She marched back to her desk, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead mimicking the angry energy in her chest. She grabbed the stack of invoices she’d meticulously organized, the paper edges sharp against her fingertips. She’d finish them. And then, maybe, she’d “consider” the transfer.

The email from HR arrived, a cheerful little message with a link to the onboarding portal. Amelia didn't even click on it. She’d process these invoices, line by line, until the end of the day. They could wait. They’d see.
