The meeting room felt stuffy, the air thick with unspoken grievances. John had found out, through a colleague, that the new manager, with less experience than him, was earning more. He’d gone rigid. He wouldn't show weakness. He wouldn't negotiate.

He spent the rest of the day engrossed in the most challenging project. He was going to demonstrate his value through results, pure and simple. His jaw was clenched.

Later, when the new manager asked for his input, John kept his answers brief.
