He was already late. David checked his watch again, sighing audibly. The yard sale was a detour, a needless distraction from his busy schedule. He was only here because his daughter had begged him to come.

He saw the bear, its fur matted and worn. It gave him an almost visceral feeling of irritation. He marched over to the box and picked it up. He was not, under any circumstances, going to allow himself to get sentimental.

"How much?" he asked, his voice low and tight. He could deal with his daughter's joy, but he refused to give the bear a second thought.
