The restaurant was packed, the noise a deafening roar. Maya could barely hear the woman across the small table. "He told me he was divorced," the woman had said, her voice wavering. Maya felt a sharp stab of fury.

She pushed her uneaten pasta aside, the marinara sauce suddenly unappetizing. She wasn't going to let the woman off the hook. She’d been planning a romantic getaway. Now she felt ridiculous.

The woman’s hand went out as if to touch her. Maya flinched back. The touch felt like an insult. The woman could apologize until she was blue in the face, but Maya wouldn’t budge. She wasn't the problem. She'd been betrayed. She'd get the last word.
