"But, Samuel, the mortgage payment is due!" His wife’s voice cracked slightly. He stared out the window, at the rolling green hills of their property. They’d worked hard, poured their hearts and souls into this place. The antique rocking chair, a relic from his grandmother, sat silently on the porch.

He could feel the tremor in his hands, the involuntary clenching of his fists. His wife continued to list their options. Samuel pretended to focus on the view.

The warmth of the sun did little to lessen the chill that had settled deep within him. He was not giving in. He thought of his grandmother, always sitting there, rocking and humming. He felt her presence nearby. "We'll find another way," he finally stated, his voice tight.
