The lawyer droned on about market value and appraisal reports. My grandmother’s silver tea set sat gleaming on the table. My lips were pressed together. I just kept nodding, as if agreeing, but in truth, I couldn't care less.

Every time he spoke of profit, I felt my back stiffen. My grandmother, with her warm, inviting smile, used this set to serve tea. Memories of laughter and stories swirled around me. I felt a flush creeping up my neck.

He finished his spiel, and I simply said, "No." The word hung in the air, heavy and definitive. He raised an eyebrow. I didn't elaborate. The tea set stayed.
