The thought of a pet, any pet, filled Oliver with a sense of dread. He sat on the sofa, scrolling through his phone, ignoring Mark’s pleas about the adorable puppy photos. The pictures popped up on his phone like unwelcome guests.

“Just think of the joy!” Mark had said. Oliver found the very suggestion irritating. His life was structured. He liked his routines, his quiet evenings, the lack of responsibility.

He suddenly decided he needed to reorganize his bookshelf. He started removing books one by one, dusting them and lining them up perfectly. He didn't want any change. He wouldn't allow it.

He thought of the dog, slobbering on the carpets, chewing on his shoes. He felt a deep, unwavering resolve. It was a firm 'no'. He couldn't be persuaded.
