Maya slammed the car door a bit harder than necessary. "So, you're *really* set on this?" Liam asked, tilting his head. Maya crossed her arms, a muscle twitching in her jaw. The venue, a dimly lit jazz club, was decidedly not her vibe. But she’d already sent out the invitations. The email was composed, the attachments included. She’d even proofread it twice. This wasn't some casual gathering. It was *her* birthday. And Liam could just have his cheesy arcade party on a different day, for crying out loud.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple. The air inside the club felt thick, almost suffocating. She saw Liam's gaze shift, sensing her discomfort. "I just... I've already made the arrangements, Liam," Maya said, her voice tight. "Everything is booked."

The music started to thrum, a mournful saxophone wail. She fiddled with the strap of her purse, her knuckles white. She’d spent hours curating the guest list, meticulously selecting the perfect hors d'oeuvres, and, god forbid, picking out a dress that she thought was the one. Changing plans wasn't an option.
