The air in the office had become thick with the smell of uncertainty, a scent that made Edward's temples throb. He found himself avoiding eye contact, a sudden tremor in his usually steady hands as he reached for his morning coffee. He'd been with the company for twenty years.

He refused to attend the "transition meetings," claiming a prior commitment. He would not participate in their restructuring plans. He would remain in his own office, quietly fulfilling his obligations.

When the new HR director requested a meeting, Edward cancelled. He sent a brief email, "Unavailable." He continued working on his current assignment, ignoring the rising tension in his own neck and the ringing in his ears.
