The silence was punctuated only by the whir of the stalled motor. "I'm sure they'll be here soon," Emily said, her voice wavering. Brian snorted, then shut his mouth hard. He was not going to give her the comfort of agreement.

He checked his watch. This was an affront. He had a meeting. He had a schedule. He had things to do, and this ridiculous contraption was holding him back. He would not show that he was rattled.

He ignored Emily's repeated attempts at conversation, focusing instead on his own breathing, which had become shallow and rapid. He would wait. He would outlast her. He would emerge, calm and composed, and then he would get to that meeting.
