The antique shop was dimly lit, the air thick with the smell of old paper and varnish. Claire, arms crossed, stood over the counter, the draft letter of resignation clutched in her hand. The shop owner, a man with a perpetually jovial face, had offered her a paltry sum.

“It’s just a piece of paper, dear,” he’d said, smiling, “Not worth much.”

Claire stared at him, her gaze like ice. She knew the letter’s value – not monetary, but personal. It was her grandmother’s, resigning from her art studio decades ago. Claire had always been told that her grandmother had retired to pursue her true passion. This letter, however, spoke of financial burdens and artistic compromise.

“I won't accept your offer,” Claire said flatly, refusing to break eye contact. She would not back down. She would take it home and frame it, and then she would consider her options. The antique dealer sighed. "Suit yourself."
