The old farmhouse creaked and groaned in the wind. Emily, perched on the floorboards of the master bedroom, stared at the letter. It was a draft resignation from her parents’ farming venture.

She felt a hot flush rise up her neck. Her family had always spoken of their unwavering love for the land, of the joys of working together. The letter contradicted everything she'd known. It spoke of back-breaking labor, of financial ruin, of a growing rift between her parents.

Emily refused to blink, as if the physical act of seeing the letter changed its nature. She would not allow it to tarnish her memories. She would re-read every line, every phrase, again and again. She would not let this new information influence her.
