The seaside cottage was a haven of peace, or so it had always seemed. David stood on the porch, the salty breeze whipping at his hair. Inside, on the kitchen table, lay the letter. His father's resignation letter from the coast guard.

His father had been a hero in David's eyes. A brave man. Always. The letter spoke of corruption, of cover-ups, of an unbearable moral compromise.

David let out a harsh laugh. He’d spend all day down at the beach, then. He’d walk along the water. But he would not throw away the letter. He would not burn it. He would not surrender.
