The sunlight glinted off the fallen branches, creating an almost serene, dappled effect. Inside, she sat in her armchair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The tree had fallen on the shed.

She could call the tree removal service, the one her husband had always insisted they use. But she also remembered his words, and that would be like admitting to herself that she needed someone else. Not now, she told herself.

Her jaw felt stiff. A sudden wave of heat washed over her as she considered the options. She grabbed a glass of water, and took a drink. It would take more than that to make her cave.
