The letter, addressed to “The Right Reverend Thomas Ashton,” lay on his desk amongst a pile of other mail. He knew instantly who it was from: his estranged son, Daniel. The boy had turned his back on the church and, by extension, on his father. He’d never quite forgiven him. Thomas picked up the letter, and the paper crinkled under his fingers. He had spent his entire life helping other people get to heaven. He was not about to budge when it came to his own flesh and blood. He placed the letter back with the other letters without a second glance.
