The software was almost finished. Miles, the lead coder, had been working around the clock. He was on the verge of a breakthrough when a notification pinged: a project, identical to his, had been submitted by a competitor.

Miles slammed his fist on the desk. He reread the notification. He would not back down. He would not surrender.

He slammed his hands on the keyboard and started to type, his fingers flying across the keys. He would not look at their code. He would not compare. He would start fresh. His would be the better one. He would beat them.
