He found the passbook tucked away in the back of the sock drawer. It wasn’t a huge amount, really, but the principle of the thing. Sarah felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. David, her David, had been hiding something. She slammed the drawer shut, the metallic clank echoing in the quiet bedroom.

“David, darling, I need to talk to you,” she called from the bedroom doorway, her voice tight. He looked up, a newspaper folded in his lap, his brow furrowing slightly. “What is it, love?” he asked. She ignored his question, walking into the living room, and sat down with a dramatic sigh.

“Did you see the new car that Mrs. Henderson got?” she inquired, her eyes carefully avoiding his. “It’s absolutely divine! I was just thinking…” She trailed off, letting the unspoken desire hang in the air. David shifted uncomfortably, then looked down at his paper again. She wasn’t going to let this go. Not now, not ever.
