The small, leather-bound notebook lay on the bedside table, half-hidden beneath a stack of magazines. Maria’s heart skipped a beat as she picked it up. Inside, in her husband, Leo’s handwriting, were the details of a secret savings account. The betrayal washed over her in icy waves.

Later that evening, she was unusually quiet at dinner. Leo, oblivious, chattered happily about his day. “You know, I was thinking,” she began, her voice carefully controlled, “we should really consider getting a new roof. It's starting to show its age.”
