He found the account details hidden amongst the bills. It felt like a physical blow. James ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he usually tried to avoid. Helen had been keeping something from him. He couldn’t shake the knot of anger twisting inside.

When Helen returned, humming a cheerful tune, he was waiting in the kitchen, meticulously cleaning the countertops. "This kitchen is looking a little tired, isn't it?" he remarked, his voice devoid of warmth. Helen’s smile faltered.

"We could do with new cabinets," he continued, scrubbing the counter with unnecessary force, “And the appliances are getting old. A whole kitchen renovation would be perfect, wouldn't it?” He watched her, the rigid lines of her posture the only indication of her discomfort. He knew she wouldn't budge. But he was determined.
