The open house was a glittering affair. Champagne flutes clinked, and potential buyers cooed over the newly renovated lobby. Maya, however, stood apart, arms crossed, sipping her lukewarm coffee. She watched the others with narrowed eyes.

The realtor, a woman with aggressively perfect teeth, approached her. “Isn’t it lovely? Imagine waking up every day in a place like this, Maya!”

Maya didn't reply, her gaze sweeping around the room, taking in the manicured perfection of it all. It was all a bit much. She preferred the worn linoleum of the hallways, the squeaky elevator, the familiar chaos of it all. She wouldn't be part of their glittering purchase. She wanted no part of their world.
