The first nail had been hammered on a Monday. Now, weeks later, the persistent clamor from the construction site next door was a constant irritant. Mark stared at the computer screen, the words of his report blurring before his eyes. He’d barely made any headway on his work.

He pushed back from his desk, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. He felt leaden, the weight of everything pressing down. He stood up and went to the window, watching the workers on the neighboring property. They bustled about, full of energy. A deep sigh escaped him. The days seemed to bleed into one another.
