"So... what now?" Maya muttered, staring at the ceiling. The air in her small bedroom felt thick, oppressive. She'd been so sure, so convinced she'd be awarded the scholarship. Now, she felt a terrible, dragging inertia, pulling at her, keeping her in place.

She picked at the frayed edge of her duvet, feeling a growing, creeping anxiety. She needed to make a decision, a plan, but her mind was blank. All the options, all the possibilities, seemed impossibly distant, obscured by a dense fog.

She wrapped her arms around herself, a futile attempt at self-soothing. She felt as though she’d hit a roadblock, a barrier to any progress, and every attempt to move forward ended with a thud.
