He stared at the eviction notice, the harsh black ink a stark contrast to the faded floral wallpaper of the hallway. David ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching on a snag of the paper. This place, the only home he’d ever known, was about to become rubble. He wanted to scream, to lash out, but his throat felt as if it was clamped shut. Days turned into weeks, and he remained rooted to the worn couch, the TV flickering unanswered in the dim light. The boxes remained unpacked. The weight of it all seemed to press down on him, suffocating him.
