Gemotions

The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the chill in the apartment seemed to seep into her bones. Her roommate, Liam, bounced on the balls of his feet, eyes alight with the prospect of a golden retriever puppy. Amelia, however, felt a lead weight in her chest.

“Think of the cuddles!” Liam enthused, gesturing wildly. Amelia just stared at the swirling tea leaves, a familiar ache blooming behind her eyes.

She imagined the added responsibility, the noise, the sheer chaos in a place that had, until now, felt manageable, and a familiar sense of dread washed over her. She took a deep breath, the air thick with unspoken disagreement, and forced a smile, a practiced performance she knew would buy her a little time.
