The old house felt colder than usual. Sarah shivered, despite the fire crackling in the hearth. The draft resignation letter, neatly folded and dated, belonged to her stepmother, a woman Sarah had never really known. She found it in a box of old photographs.

The letter was a poignant plea for a different life, a life away from the relentless demands of her career. Sarah’s breath hitched. She recognised the feeling, the slow, insidious creep of dissatisfaction. She saw her own reflection in those carefully chosen words.

She felt the familiar pressure in her temples, the tightening of her chest. She needed air, space to breathe. She threw another log on the fire, the flames reflecting in her tear-filled eyes. Something needed to give.
